Giancarlo Barolat, MD, attended the University of Torino Medical School in Italy, and received his medical degree in 1974. While in medical school, his father passed away from a massive stroke, which led to Dr. Barolat’s decision to pursue neurology and subsequently neurosurgery. He therefore served his neurology residency at the University of Torino (1974-1978). Furthermore, he relocated to the United States, where he conducted his fellowship in functional neurosurgery and neurostimulation at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, FL (1978-1979). In addition, he completed an internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin (1979-1980) followed by a residency in neurosurgery (1980-1985) and a fellowship in spinal cord injury (1985-1986) at the same educational venue. Dr. Barolat received board certification in neurosurgery from the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the Italian Board of Neurosurgery. He is the recipient of the Professional Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (2010), the International Neuromodulation Society (2013), the West Virginia Society of Pain Medicine (2013), and the North American Neuromodulation Society (2013).
